Each day we view plentiful corporate identities and their innovative logo designs. But before we design a logo design, do we ever give a thought about the evolution of logo designing? So let us view the complete history and origins of logos right from the distant past to the contemporary time.

Greek Origins:

While you would not find a specific story about the origins of famous logos, the term "logo" is taken from the Greek word ‘logos/ which mean ‘word'. A related expression used these days is "logotype" that stands for "type of several letters spread in one section". In ancient times, the logo was employed as a secret message by Greeks to communicate secret messages of their kings and rulers. Many early Greek and Roman coins portray the monograms (or logos as we say today) of rulers.

Trading symbols:

In the 13th century, the logo was used I the form of a trading symbol. Merchants at that time used monograms and trademarks to differentiate their trading items. Some of the most prominent users of this technique were farmers, goldsmiths, paper makers, and other traders. And farmers set the tone for branding by employing hot iron stamps to brand their cattle from one another.

The first Logos for Corporations:

One of the first companies to get a logo design for their corporation was the Prudential Insurance's "The Rock of Gibraltar" logo. It was designed in 1890's. One more early corporate identity is RCA's old Nipper logo designed in 1910. The Chase Logo, created by Chermayeff & Geismar in 1960 is known to have set the standards for modern logo designing. The Chase logo with its exemplary design was the foremost abstract logo of the contemporary period. The Chase logo with its exemplary design was the foremost abstract logo of the contemporary period.
