Discovering Autism: the missing puzzle piece

Puzzles are one of the few ‘toys' that are enjoyed by children but also by adults, the difficulty changes as you get older but not the overall skill and technique. Puzzles are good for brain development in children and for keeping your brain active as you get older, in fact if you have children your may well notice their development progress as they play with puzzles.
The development of autistic children and children with other conditions on the autistic spectrum, such as Aspergers, often differs from that of other children but with puzzles they often perform as well as other children or in some cases better. For this reason for diagnosing autism puzzle pieces are often used to test whether a child has overall slow development or may have a condition like autism.

Puzzle pieces are a symbol for autism awareness, for many people who discover they have autism or another autistic spectrum disorder, or for the parents of a child with these conditions, that awareness of the conditions is the autism puzzle piece they have been looking for to explain why they are a little different to other people

The autism puzzle piece is misunderstood by some as meaning that people with autism have a piece missing but this is not the case and when people discover they or their children have Autism it completes an understanding of themselves and who they are they wouldn't have had before.

Once someone has an understanding of their condition they are far more able to manage their condition, as there are numerous books and numerous societies to help people live with the conditions and make the most out of them. Often people with autistic spectrum disorders have remarkable skills in a particular area, these savants may excel at something such as music or memory and these skills once discovered can bring them much more happiness and contentedness with life

Children especially with autism who don't realize can very much feel like there is something missing so the autism puzzle piece means a lot to them especially once they come to realize. Autistic children are often left thinking that they are simply different to everyone while there are hundreds of thousands of Autism sufferers nationwide. Autism sufferers are also often treated as being stupid in a classroom because they struggle to learn in the same way as other children and struggle to get their thoughts across: this is highly frustrating for them. As an alternative to the autism puzzle piece you could have a key as a logo as a child being diagnosed with autism unlocks so much in their lives, this may mean going to a school for those with autism where the style of teaching will suit them and they can feel part of a group of similar people. It may also be that a child with Autism or other Autistic spectrum disorders will stay in their school but will be taught in a different way, helped to express themselves and their particular skills can be nurtured making them feel far more positive about life and themselves.
